K-Pop Legend Showdown: Lee Sang-min Slams Shin Jung-hwan’s ‘Unpaid Dues’ Claims! 💸🎤

The intricate world of K-pop, often lauded for its dazzling visuals and meticulously crafted performances, sometimes conceals complex financial histories. A recent social media storm involving two iconic figures from the legendary group R.oo.L.a. has once again brought the topic of artist settlements to the forefront, sparking widespread debate across the industry.

Hello Korea confirms that broadcaster Lee Sang-min, a former member of the iconic 90s group R.oo.L.a., has fiercely refuted claims made by fellow ex-member Shin Jung-hwan regarding alleged unpaid settlements from their time together. The controversy ignited when Shin Jung-hwan publicly asserted that he had not received proper payments during his tenure with the group.

On January 4, 2026, Lee Sang-min took to his personal SNS, posting a screenshot of a news article detailing Shin Jung-hwan‘s accusations. He accompanied the image with a terse yet firm caption: “바로잡기. 팩트 체크” (Correction. Fact Check), signaling his intent to set the record straight.

In his rebuttal, Lee Sang-min expressed clear indignation, stating, “I was also an artist under an agency, so why would I settle payments for anyone? All members received the same settlement.” He further emphasized his position, clarifying, “I was not R.oo.L.a.’s CEO. We all received the same settlement and worked twice as hard~ We were passionate R.oo.L.a. members.” This statement directly challenges Shin Jung-hwan‘s insinuation that Lee Sang-min, as a producer, had control over their financial distributions.

Meanwhile, the origin of this dispute stems from Shin Jung-hwan‘s appearance on the YouTube channel ‘B급 청문회’ (B-Grade Hearing). During the segment, he made several explosive claims:

  • 💸 “Didn’t receive proper settlement during R.oo.L.a. days.”
  • 💰 “Received only 12 million won (approximately 9,000 USD) over 5 years.”
  • 🤝 “Lee Sang-min was the producer, he launched us with the first album then sold us to another company.”

These allegations quickly went viral, igniting a heated discussion among fans and industry insiders about the historical practices of artist management and financial transparency in the early days of K-pop. As both sides present their arguments, the question of “who holds the truth” remains at the forefront.

This ongoing dispute underscores the critical need for transparency and fair practice in the entertainment industry. Resolving such historical grievances is essential for the collective well-being and integrity of our beloved K-culture landscape.

The K-pop community eagerly awaits further developments in this unfolding drama, hoping for a clear resolution to these long-standing claims.
