K-Pop Icon Kang Hye-won Dazzles in J-Drama Debut: ‘First Kiss That Tastes Like Love’ 💋🍚

Making her highly anticipated debut in TV TOKYO and Netflix’s simultaneous release of ‘First Kiss That Tastes Like Love’ (literal title: ‘첫입에 반하다’), Kang Hye-won embodies Park Rin, a diligent graduate student navigating the complexities of life in Japan. The series, which premiered on January 12th, masterfully explores the tender dynamics of a pure love story, highlighting the cultural nuances and value differences between Japan and Korea as two individuals, initially disoriented by these distinctions, find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other.

The inaugural episode set the stage for a fated first encounter between Park Rin and Hase Taiga, portrayed by Akaso Eiji. Hase Taiga, once a promising marathon ace, now drifts through his days aimlessly after a career setback. In stark contrast, Park Rin, despite facing significant challenges in her academic pursuits and adjusting to life as an international student in Japan, consistently strives towards her aspirations.

Park Rin‘s journey is far from smooth, as she faces a confluence of challenges that test her resolve. She finds herself in a precarious situation, grappling with:

  • 📝 The immense pressure of submitting her graduate thesis.
  • 🏡 An unexpected eviction notice due to dormitory renovations.

Amidst this demanding routine, a chance visit to a small Japanese restaurant offers a surprising respite. It is there, tasting the comforting onigiri prepared by part-timer Hase Taiga, that she momentarily forgets the weariness of her daily struggles.

Intriguingly, Park Rin emerges as a beacon of positivity, offering comfort to the adrift Hase Taiga with the inspiring notion that ‘we are all in training.’ Her candid and bold personality shines through as she takes the initiative to offer him her phone number, a refreshing display of assertiveness. Speaking of assertiveness, Kang Hye-won herself has remarkably leveraged her extensive Japanese language skills, honed during her time as a singer. Her performance transcends mere dialogue, infusing Park Rin’s character with vibrant individuality through nuanced expressions and captivating eye movements, truly bringing her to life on screen.

Kang Hye-won‘s transition from K-pop idol to actress truly embodies elegant versatility; her ability to command screen presence, even in a role focused on everyday struggles, speaks volumes about her innate charisma and potential to influence global aesthetics. We are particularly captivated by her subtle yet impactful portrayal, which effortlessly transcends cultural boundaries.

Fans worldwide can catch Kang Hye-won’s compelling performance in ‘First Kiss That Tastes Like Love,’ airing every Monday at 11:06 PM on TV TOKYO and available for global exclusive streaming on Netflix.
