Jo Yu-jeong Unleashes Her ‘Desperate Unrequited Love’ for Acting in ‘Oh Se Yi Sa’ ✨🎭

On January 12, 2026, the K-drama and film landscape was given a stark reminder of unwavering dedication, as actress Jo Yu-jeong opened up about her profound commitment to her craft. Known for her memorable roles, Jo Yu-jeong recently garnered significant attention for her transformative performance in the film ‘Even If This Love Disappears From the World Tonight’ (often referred to as ‘Oh Se Yi Sa’), a role she describes as born from a “desperate, unrequited love” for acting.

In her initial, brief appearance in ‘Oh Se Yi Sa’, lasting less than a minute, Jo Yu-jeong powerfully conveyed the essence of her character, Ji-min, through nothing but a hardened expression and a few lines. Her eyes are filled with unspoken anger, her lips sealed in a determined line, signaling an unwavering refusal to compromise. This economical yet impactful portrayal perfectly complemented the film’s nuanced narrative, setting the stage for a poignant love story that unfolds from her character’s resolute demeanor.

Ji-min is the sole confidante of Seo-yoon (played by Shin Si-ah), who suffers from a unique form of amnesia where her memories reset each day. Burdened by a protector’s sense of duty, Ji-min fiercely guards Seo-yoon, particularly when a seemingly playful confession from Jae-won (Choo Young-woo) to Seo-yoon takes a serious turn. Her intervention marks the true beginning of the film’s melancholic romance.

During a recent interview, Jo Yu-jeong shared her intentional approach to portraying Ji-min: “I wanted to convey a resolute and cold image. I tried to create a wary, cat-like expression towards everyone except Seo-yoon. Every aspect – my speech, tone, and facial expressions – aimed for this. It was a significant challenge for me, as I’m not naturally so firm.” In fact, anyone familiar with her previous works, such as ‘Record of Youth’ or ‘Recipe for Farewell’, would recognize her naturally rhythmic, almost melodic speaking style and charming demeanor. Her transformation for ‘Oh Se Yi Sa’ is truly remarkable, featuring a rarely seen sternness and perpetually furrowed brow.

Her dedication to the role was absolute. “I practiced a stiff, abrupt way of speaking,” she revealed. “I even took vocal lessons last year to establish my voice tone. I constantly recorded myself and sent various versions to the director. For two months before filming, ‘Oh Se Yi Sa’ was my entire world. It was an all-in effort.” Interestingly, one of her hobbies, walking, became part of her intensive preparation. She would walk 10 kilometers, continuously murmuring her lines, immersing herself completely in the character.

This palpable desperation stemmed from a lengthy hiatus in her career. Following ‘Recipe for Farewell’, the industry faced significant challenges, leading to a lack of new project offers for Jo Yu-jeong. Encountering ‘Oh Se Yi Sa’ after such a long wait imbued the project with profound personal meaning. “It couldn’t be anything but extraordinary,” she reflected. “I was desperate, and I had waited for so long.”

Her journey into acting began early. “Since I was little, I wanted to be an entertainer. I thought of being a singer, then a comedian,” she shared. However, a pivotal moment came after watching the film ‘The Classified File’, where she was captivated by Yoo Hae-jin’s performance of a real-life character. “I was fascinated by his realistic acting; I wanted to act that way too.”

During her hiatus, Jo Yu-jeong tirelessly dedicated herself to self-improvement, knowing that idleness could lead to a permanent pause in an actor’s career. With her impressive height and striking features, she even trained extensively for potential action roles, approaching her workouts with the discipline of a professional athlete. “I hit the gym incredibly hard. I’d spend over 40 minutes on the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ machine,” she stated. “My motivation for working out was purely to improve my acting. I have diligence and tenacity.”

She described acting as an “unrequited love” – one so profound it pushes her to her limits. “Because I love it so much, I am harsh on myself. As the waiting period stretched on, I blamed myself a lot. Now, I feel I’ve developed a fierce spirit.” This profound desperation undeniably permeates her performance in ‘Oh Se Yi Sa’. Given the film’s strong fantastical elements, its believability largely hinges on the actors’ individual prowess. It is their artistry that infuses naturalness into scenes that could otherwise feel improbable.

Speaking of artistry, Jo Yu-jeong highly praised the ensemble. “The chemistry was fantastic. Choo Young-woo, Si-ah unnie, and Ho Eun are all incredibly intuitive and talented actors. We truly became like real friends. I think that’s why our interactions felt so natural in every moment. We hope to continue acting together happily like this.”

The sheer dedication Jo Yu-jeong poured into ‘Oh Se Yi Sa’ is not just inspiring but a powerful testament to the true grit required in the acting world. Her performance hints at a depth and versatility that Hello Korea will undoubtedly be watching closely in her future projects.

This unwavering passion, transforming personal hardship into powerful art, solidifies Jo Yu-jeong’s position as a rising talent to watch. We eagerly anticipate her next move.
