AKMU’s Bold New Beginning: Tears After Just 8 Days? 😭 What’s Next for K-Pop’s Beloved Duo? ✨
The K-Pop landscape is constantly evolving, with artists often making bold moves that redefine their careers. Few transitions, however, capture the industry’s attention and affection quite like a beloved act forging a new path. Such is the journey of sibling duo AKMU, whose recent departure from long-time label YG Entertainment has set the stage for a new chapter, now illuminated by a remarkably candid, and emotional, update from member Lee Chanhyuk.
The duo’s much-anticipated ‘new musical journey’ was hinted at earlier this month when Lee Chanhyuk took to his personal SNS on January 8, sharing a video of himself and sister Lee Suhyun engaged in ‘morning running.’ What followed, however, stirred a deeper emotional response among fans.

Shortly after the running clip, Chanhyuk uploaded a poignant photo of Suhyun, her face hidden beneath a hat, appearing visibly distressed and crying. The accompanying caption, starkly simple yet powerful, read: ‘D+8 She’s just crying.’ This emotional reveal comes just a day after Chanhyuk declared on January 7 that AKMU had been undergoing ‘intense training from January 1‘ in preparation for their ‘new start’ – a phrase widely understood to signify their activities under fresh management following their departure from YG.
This monumental shift officially began in November last year, when AKMU concluded their exclusive contract with YG Entertainment. Having been with the agency since their debut, this decision marked a significant turning point not just for the artists, but also for the label.
In a rare and candid statement at the time, YG clarified the circumstances surrounding the separation. According to the agency, Yang Hyun-suk, the General Producer, had met with Chanhyuk and Suhyun approximately six months prior to discuss their future. The core of their dilemma was whether to remain with YG, their home for 12 years, or venture into independent challenges. Intriguingly, Yang Hyun-suk reportedly encouraged the duo to explore new environments, pledging his unwavering support from the sidelines.
The siblings’ farewell messages reflected a deep connection to their former agency:
- Lee Suhyun expressed immense gratitude: “To the many employees who have been with us for two years, and to YG who always believed in and respected us, thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️ YG Family was my pride, and thanks to you, I was truly happy. We are embarking on a new journey, but I will never forget you as my hometown! Thank you so much. I sincerely pray for everyone’s health and happiness. Goodbye!” 👋
- Lee Chanhyuk posted a more concise yet equally impactful message: “Goodbye, YG (2013-2025). I owe you a lot. Thank you for raising me.” 🙏

This emotional moment underscores the immense pressure and dedication inherent in redefining an artistic legacy, a challenging but often necessary step for growth in the dynamic world of K-Pop. It’s a vivid reminder that even seasoned artists face vulnerability as they forge new paths.
As AKMU embarks on this challenging yet exciting chapter, the K-Pop world watches with bated breath, ready to support their journey toward an even brighter future.
