Beyond the Flood: Kim Da-mi on AI, Motherhood, and the Divisive Future of K-SFX Cinema 🌊🤖

In an era where technological innovation rapidly reshapes storytelling, Netflix’s latest K-Sci-Fi epic, ‘The Great Flood,’ emerges as a testament to both ambition and the complex human-AI interface. Headlining this ambitious project is the formidable Kim Da-mi, whose latest interview reveals the sheer magnitude of the challenges she faced, not just physically but emotionally, in bringing this vision to life.

At just thirty years old, Kim Da-mi, renowned for her powerful roles, stepped into uncharted territory with ‘The Great Flood.’ The film, a high-stakes blend of disaster and science fiction, tasked her with portraying a mother’s fierce maternal love – a sentiment she admits was challenging to grasp at her relatively young age. What’s more, the narrative heavily focuses on her character, leading to an intense, almost singular on-screen presence where every scene pivots around her.

The physical toll was immense. We see her relentlessly battling the rising waters, carrying a child, enduring falls, and engaging in intense action sequences against armed men. She navigates endless stairs, constantly pushing her character, Anna, an AI researcher, to the brink in a world consumed by an apocalyptic flood.

Speaking to Sports Seoul, Kim Da-mi revealed the grueling nature of the shoot. ‘It felt ten times harder than any other set I’ve been on,’ she confessed. ‘I’ve always enjoyed swimming, but filming this made me truly understand how terrifying water can be. Experiencing even a fraction of a natural disaster made me realize humanity’s helplessness. I haven’t even been near water for leisure since filming ‘The Great Flood.””

The premise is stark: an asteroid collision has submerged Earth, virtually wiping out humanity. In this desolate future, the ‘Isabella Lab‘ is established to rebuild civilization, with Anna (Kim Da-mi) at its core. Her mission? To develop an ‘Emotion Engine‘ – an AI designed to harness human emotions. The crux of this monumental task lies in understanding maternal love, positing that humanity’s intrinsic capacity for profound affection will ultimately determine its future. This technological quest, intertwined with fundamental human emotion, presented a unique challenge for Da-mi.

Portraying motherhood, particularly the nuanced emotion of maternal love, was a significant hurdle. ‘I worried if viewers would truly accept me as a mother,’ she admitted. Interestingly, initial directorial guidance encouraged her to embrace the journey of ‘discovering love’ rather than starting as a fully realized maternal figure. ‘It was my first time playing a mother, and even I felt awkward seeing myself with a child on my back,’ she explained, adding, ‘But I drew on the experiences of my friends who are mothers, hoping to make it believable.’

Upon its release, ‘The Great Flood’ immediately became one of the most polarizing films of the year, sparking intense ‘ho-bul-ho’ (like-or-dislike) debates.

  • 🌐 Global Phenomenon: It soared to Netflix Global #1, ranking high in numerous countries and hitting the top spot in many regions.
  • 📉 Harsh Criticisms: Despite its streaming success, the film garnered severe critiques, particularly domestically. Many found its genre blending clumsy and its narrative hard to follow.
  • 💬 Viral Comment: One widely circulated comment succinctly captured the sentiment: ‘The first 20 minutes were a disaster movie; then the movie itself became a disaster.’
  • 🍅 Rotten Tomatoes: Its critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes stands at a mere 54%.

Kim Da-mi herself expressed surprise at the extreme division of opinions. ‘I never expected such a polarized response,’ she noted. ‘Seeing the intense ‘ho-bul-ho’ reactions, I realized our film offers a lot to discuss and provides diverse perspectives. Given its mixed genre, I think people found it unique, and I hope they appreciate it as a new attempt.’ She even likened the script to a ‘mathematical formula,’ recalling daily hour-long discussions. ‘Ultimately, we hope viewers found it intriguing,’ she concluded.

The ambition to fuse humanity’s most primal emotion with cutting-edge AI in a dystopian future is a bold narrative experiment. While ‘The Great Flood’ might spark debate, its very existence pushes the boundaries of how we envision technology intertwining with the essence of human survival and emotion on screen.

As the conversation around ‘The Great Flood’ continues to evolve, Kim Da-mi‘s commitment to tackling such a complex role remains undeniably compelling.
