The 68th Annual Grammy Awards, scheduled for February 2, are poised to be K-Pop’s most significant yet. For the first time ever, K-Pop artists have secured nominations in the coveted General Field categories, marking a monumental shift in global recognition. Blackpink’s Rosé, showcasing her prowess beyond the group, has earned a nod for “APT.,” her sensational collaboration with legendary artist Bruno Mars. This track, lauded for its witty charm and addictive melody, spent an incredible 45 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 3—a testament to its enduring global impact and a career-high for Rosé as a solo artist.

Equally groundbreaking is the nomination for “Golden,” the OST from Netflix’s ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters.’ Produced by Teddy’s The Black Label and sung by former SM trainee Lee Jae, “Golden” transcended the screen to become a cultural phenomenon. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for an astonishing 8 consecutive weeks and shattered Netflix viewing records, even surpassing ‘Squid Game.’ This unprecedented success solidifies the powerful synergy between K-Pop and K-Animation, opening a new chapter for the Hallyu wave. Adding to this historic occasion, Eve America’s global girl group, CAT’s Eye, has also been nominated for Best New Artist, making 2026 truly a year of multiple blessings for K-Pop on the global stage.

The nominations for these trailblazing tracks are extensive:

  • APT.: 🎶 Song of the Year, 💿 Record of the Year, 👫 Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
  • Golden: 🎶 Song of the Year, 👫 Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, 🎬 Best Song Written For Visual Media, 🎛️ Best Remixed Recording, 📀 Best Compilation Soundtrack

The anticipation is palpable as we await how many of these prestigious trophies K-Pop will bring home.

The Long-Awaited Return: BTS Counts Down to March 20th 💜

The “21st-century Beatles,” BTS, have all but confirmed their full group comeback date: March 20, 2026. This highly anticipated revelation came through New Year’s postcard sets delivered to Weverse members and Korean fans. Each postcard featured handwritten messages from RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, alongside a cryptic new logo and the date “2026.3.20.” This marks the official end of their military hiatus and signals the beginning of a massive world tour, igniting their 2026 activities in earnest.

The members’ messages were particularly moving:

  • Jungkook: “ARMY, are you healthy? I miss you. I’m always working hard! Please take care of us in 2026 ♡ Happy New Year!”
  • RM: “Finally, finally, finally 2026 has come… BTS is coming.”
  • Jin: Emphasized greeting fans “as a team.”
  • J-Hope: Described it as “the year we can be together again.”
  • RM: Declared he “waited more eagerly than anyone else.”
  • Jin: Expressed deep gratitude: “Thank you so much for waiting.”
  • Suga: Showed affection: “Let’s enjoy this year together. I love you.”
  • J-Hope: Exclaimed with excitement: “What I imagined is finally real!”
  • Jimin: Rejoiced: “The year we meet has arrived.”
  • V: Promised: “In 2026, we’ll make more and better memories.”

Since their rise as K-Pop’s leading act after BIGBANG and EXO in 2015, BTS has spent the last decade shattering records, both domestically and internationally, while evolving their team identity. Despite navigating “the 7-year curse” and securing two contract renewals with Big Hit, their journey has been remarkably smooth. This comeback doesn’t feel like a group fading from their prime but rather a powerful return from a temporary hiatus, on par with any active idol group.

While recent murmurs—such as Jungkook’s dating rumors with aespa’s Winter, RM’s past comments about group disbandment, and Suga’s scooter accident during his public service—have created some unnecessary noise, the collective excitement from fans, the public, and the industry for the return of these living legends remains overwhelmingly positive.

A return that once seemed impossible is now a reality: BIGBANG will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a dramatic comeback on April 12, 2026. This milestone, especially after years of trials, is a testament to resilience and unwavering artistic vision.

Central to this resurgence is leader G-Dragon. Just over two years ago, he faced drug allegations but swiftly cleared his name through voluntary police cooperation. Remarkably, within two years, he was crowned a Daesang (Grand Prize) winner at both the MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) and MMA (Melon Music Awards)—an almost unbelievable timeline of redemption. In 2024 and 2025, G-Dragon unequivocally reasserted his influence. He released “POWER,” his first solo track in approximately eight years, followed by “HOME SWEET HOME” with Taeyang and Daesung, subtly hinting at BIGBANG’s return. His collaboration with PD Kim Tae-ho on “Good Day” brought together top Korean stars, showcasing his magnetic presence. He then topped off his solo comeback with the third full album “Uebermensch,” solidifying his return as a Daesang artist in 2025.

Now, BIGBANG is set to celebrate their 20th anniversary coronation at the 2026 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in April. This will be a momentous occasion, especially given that their planned 2020 Coachella performance as a four-member group (including T.O.P) was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At this year’s Coachella, BIGBANG plans to deliver a global performance that encapsulates their two-decade musical journey, solidifying their legendary status. The festival boasts an impressive lineup, including headliners Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, and Karol G, alongside acts like The xx, Disclosure, The Strokes, Giveon, Young Thug, Kaskade, and fellow K-Pop artists Taemin and CAT’s Eye.

NewJeans’ Deepening Tunnel: Daniel’s Legal Battle Continues ⚖️

Meanwhile, a dark cloud continues to hover over the future of 4th-generation top-tier group NewJeans, a saga that will undoubtedly be remembered in K-Pop history. With the group’s complete lineup fractured, a comeback seems distant, and there’s even a possibility of them reforming as a trio. Even if a comeback were possible, navigating the accumulated public resentment and offering a genuine apology for the prolonged legal battle presents an intractable challenge.

After their failed attempt to validate their exclusive contract with agency ADOR, the members’ paths diverged despite their monumental success, including multiple domestic awards and record-breaking Billboard K-Pop chart performance within just two years of debut. While younger members Haerin and Hyein, followed by Hanni, have announced their return to ADOR, Minji is still reportedly in discussions, and Daniel is headed back to court.

Up until the summer of 2024, a comeback seemed plausible. However, the intractable conflict between former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin and HYBE escalated into a long-term legal battle, inevitably halting NewJeans’ activities. The rift with HYBE has progressively darkened the group’s prospects.

The situation intensified when ADOR announced on December 29, 2025, that they deemed it “difficult for Daniel to continue as a NewJeans member and ADOR artist,” subsequently terminating her exclusive contract. ADOR has since filed a lawsuit seeking 43.1 billion won in liquidated damages and compensation from Daniel, her family, and former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin. All three parties have reportedly retained the same legal counsel for a joint defense, indicating a protracted legal battle. With Min Hee-jin’s “my way” approach seemingly unchanged and public sentiment largely negative, Daniel appears to be heading deeper into the legal tunnel.

Editor’s Comment: 2026 is poised to be a crucible year for K-Pop, simultaneously celebrating its global ascent and confronting its internal struggles. The outcomes of these events will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on K-Pop’s cultural tapestry for generations to come.
